EC Waste, owner and operator of the Peñuelas Valley Landfill (PVL), publicly urges the acting-Governor of Puerto Rico, Victor Suárez and law enforcement authorities to get serious about the situation in Peñuelas and restore law and order so that the employees of EC Waste can return to work, and the community of Peñuelas can go back to normalcy.

“The Puerto Rico Independence Party is destabilizing Puerto Rico, and undermining the safety and jobs of employees of EC Waste. The Government of Puerto Rico has failed to date to provide the necessary public safety in Peñuelas. The continuation of this situation is threatening jobs, threatening Puerto Rico’s economy, and will only create an environmental crisis as the industrial waste continue to pile up at industrial facilities without the necessary environmental controls that EC Waste provides”, reaffirmed Ricardo Soto, spokesman of EC Waste.

Soto continued, “Claims of an agreement to stop the disposal of ash are false. The only agreement that should be reached – and one we will agree to – is for activists led by the independent movement to stop violating the law and allow our employees to go back to work.”

Moreover, the company is deeply concerned with the acts of harassment, persecution and violence that some of its employees and suppliers have experienced. The most recent example – a bomb threat – was aimed at frightening employees and blocking access to the facility.

EC Waste is also urging the Puerto Rico Financial Oversight & Management Board to take action. Failure by the Government and the Oversight Board to address this will undermine any hope of economic recovery, and without any doubt, this will tarnish any hope of a smooth return to the financial markets by the next Government of Puerto Rico.
